oral medication guide
your go-to guide on how to take your oral therapies safely, effectively, and confidently

1. wash hands thoroughly
before touching any pills, capsules, or powders, wash your hands with soap and warm water, then dry with a clean towel.
2. gather all supplies
assemble your medication, full glass of water (or other beverage if directed), pill cutter if needed, and a small journal or log for tracking doses and any side-effects.

3. check the label & timing
confirm the medication name, dosage, that you’ve received the correct one, and follow whether it should be taken with food, after fasting, or at a certain time of day. confirm expiration date.
4. prepare the dose
-
if pills/capsules: ensure they are intact—do not crush or split unless instructed.
-
if powder or sublingual: follow provider instructions exactly—mix with correct liquid or place under tongue.
-
set the correct dose and make sure you have everything ready before administering.

5. take the medication
with water unless directed otherwise; sit upright for 10-15 minutes if required. swallow the pill/capsule whole or allow sublingual/chewable to dissolve as directed. do not lie down immediately if dosing requires upright positioning (for example, some medications for reflux or absorption).
6. what to expect
after taking your dose, you may notice the effects begin within minutes to hours depending on the medicine. some benefits occur gradually (days/weeks). monitor how you feel and any changes.

7. monitor & log response
record how you feel: energy, mood, sleep, digestion, side effects. this feedback helps your provider adjust the plan. bring this log to follow-up appointments.
8. storage & follow-up
store your oral medicines as instructed (e.g., refrigerated or at room temperature, away from light/damp). schedule routine follow-up labs or visits as directed by your provider. if you miss a dose, follow the “missed dose” instructions provided.
